KCBS is a nonprofit organization dedicated to promoting and enjoying barbeque. Recognizing barbeque as America’s Cuisine, the mission of the Kansas City Barbeque Society is to celebrate, teach, preserve and promote barbeque as a culinary technique, sport and art form.

It all began one evening, in the fall of 1985. Carolyn and Gary Wells and Rick Welch, a.k.a. Sir Loin, were enjoying some friendly libation and chatting about barbeque. Carolyn was Executive Vice-President of Wicker Barbeque Products and networked extensively in the barbeque market. All competed in the few existing barbeque competitions in the area – The American Royal, The Great Lenexa Barbeque Battle, and the Blue Springs Blaze Off. Members of other cooking teams were always calling wanting to know when the next event would be held. Sadly, there were none.

After a few more drinks and still pondering this dilemma, Carolyn, Gary and Rick decided to form a club for the cooks. The only criteria for membership was that none of it be taken seriously – to do so was grounds for disqualification. Today KCBS is the world’s largest organization of barbeque and grilling enthusiasts with over 20,000 members worldwide. KCBS sanctions over 500 barbeque contests worldwide, but none are better than American Legion Post 53 and City of DuPont’s Annual DuPont-Hudson’s Bay BBQ Competition. Come see for yourself the 3rd weekend of August 2023 in beautiful Clocktower Park, DuPont, WA
